A suspected smuggling boat carrying migrants was discovered empty near Sunset Cliffs in San Diego, marking the latest in a string of similar incidents along the coastline. Authorities responded to a call about a Panga boat that arrived with approximately 15 individuals who safely disembarked. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of migrant smuggling attempts by sea, posing risks to both individuals and first responders.
A suspected smuggling boat was found empty near Sunset Cliffs on Sunday morning, San Diego Fire-Rescue reported. According to Marine Safety Lieutenant Brian Clark, they received a call about a Panga boat that arrived at Ladera Street with approximately 15 people, who disembarked without any issues in the water. A nearby surfer contacted 911 to report the boat, stating that no one appeared to be in distress and they were wearing life jackets as they exited the water.
By the time first responders arrived, everyone had already left, and a 20-foot Panga boat was found stranded on the rocks. This incident is just the latest in a series of similar events where Panga boats carrying migrants have landed on San Diego's coastline. In recent months, there have been multiple instances of Panga boats attempting to transport migrants ashore. Just last week, the Coast Guard intercepted a suspected human smuggling boat with 21 migrants aboard approximately 20 miles off the coast of Point Loma. All were taken into custody by Border Patrol. In another incident, 14 migrants were found on a boat. On Saturday, a boat carrying more than a dozen migrants was overwhelmed by a wave as it neared the Ocean Beach surfline. Tragically, a 57-year-old woman trapped in the boat died, and several others were injured.Lieutenant Clark emphasized that migrant boats pose a significant danger not only to the individuals on board but also to first responders. He recounted that during one rescue, several lifeguards had to go under the boat to pull people out, as some were trapped underneath. The CBP reported that in the past three months alone, they have collaborated with other agencies to respond to over 200 smuggling attempts by water, including individuals attempting to cross on flotation devices, personal watercraft, recreational boats, and Panga boats.
