The company invested in a Dogpatch entertainment development featuring three geodesic projection domes and a pyramid
The San Francisco-based music industry juggernaut Empire has taken a financial stake in a technology-rich entertainment development planned for the Central Waterfront featuring three geodesic projection domes and a pyramid.
Called Elevation Sky Park San Francisco, the $6.5 million immersive entertainment complex would provide venues suitable for a wide variety of music, film, art, theater, education and other types of events, said Greg Gordon, co-founder and chief operating officer of Elevation XR, the company developing the project. “This has been a labor of love, and continues to be a labor of love for us, and hopefully will be something amazing for The City,” Gordon said. “We're not some out of town developers trying to do something just to make a buck. We're in this to really do something great.” A veteran San Francisco music studio producer and educator, Gordon expects that the Elevation Sky Park project would last for about five years, the term of Elevation XR’s lease with Brookfield Properties. Brookfield is redeveloping Pier 70, the historic Port of San Francisco-owned shipyard property in the Dogpatch neighborhood where the entertainment complex would go. “Elevation Sky Park provides an exciting venue for the community to gather and enjoy themselves. It will be a destination driver for us and complement the creative community and innovators open today at historic Building 12,” said Tim Bacon, vice president of development for Brookfield, in a statement provided by a spokesperson. “This is a transformative way to activate the site today for the community while we progress with the development.” Gordon said he has been working on the plan for two years, and it became possible because the pandemic and its aftermath disrupted The City’s commercial real-estate industry and drove down prices. The team behind the project previously ran something similar in Los Angeles called Wisdome LA that opened in late 2018 and operated for more than 30 months, hosting roughly 400 events that drew in excess of 250,000 people, according to an Elevation XR spokesperson. The new development, featuring prefabricated materials, is currently in the permitting process and is projected to open in the spring, according to Gordon. The pyramid as currently contemplated would serve a gateway function with space for about 300 people and ticketing, merchandise and refreshment services, he said. It too will have immersive sound and visual systems, an Elevation XR spokesperson said. The largest dome would hold close to 1,000 people for events like live concerts and DJ performances, Gordon said. It would be equipped with projection technology capable of casting 360-degree imagery, he said. Anticipated musical offerings include electronic music performances by artists represented by Empire’s Dirtybird label, Gordon said. Ghazi Shami, Empire’s founder and CEO, said in a press release that “Elevation Sky Park is the perfect stage to reimagine how music and culture come to life." The medium-sized dome would hold up to 500 depending on whether people are seated or standing. It would be used for health and wellness pursuits, including yoga, sound baths and dance parties; corporate events; and educational workshops, among other things, Gordon said. The smallest dome, which would have seating for 250 people, would be used for cinematic showings and have 360-degree capable projection technology, he said. Empire, founded in 2010, has grown into a global force partnering with major artists like Kendrick Lamar, Fireboy DML, Shaboozey, Asake, XXXTentacion, and Anderson.Paak. Today, it has employees in 25 countries, including more than 100 in The City. Brookfield Properties has already brought a beer brewery, bakery, pottery studio, padel and pickleball club and varied other ventures to Pier 70. Future plans for the 28-acre area include housing, offices and parks.
