The university said Thursday the 'activists' who started the encampment were not 'recognized' as part of the Emory community.
Emory University accused pro-Palestine protesters Thursday of disrupting students who were finishing the academic year. Local college students and residents set up tents and raised banners at Emory’s Quad park to demand the university divest from companies they perceive as profiting off Israel ’s war against Hamas.
“The activists who initially gathered were not recognized as members of our community and were disrupting the university as our students finish classes and prepare for finals,” university spokesperson Laura Diamond told The National Desk . “Some members of the Emory community later joined the initial group.” The Emory Police Department arrested dozens of protesters after they refused to leave the park, according to Diamond. Several demonstrators allegedly trespassed onto campus grounds. “Emory does not tolerate vandalism or other criminal activity on campus,” Diamond said. “In response to this encampment, the Emory Police Department notified these individuals that they were trespassing. When they refused to leave, law enforcement cleared the Quad and took a couple of dozen people into custody.” The arrests purportedly came after Emory police officers issued several orders to disperse. Atlanta police and the Georgia State Patrol helped clear the encampment, according to Diamond.for Mondoweiss, a blog covering Palestinian, Israeli and American relations, that Emory held some of the strongest ties to companies complicit in Israel’s "genocide of Palestinians." Strategies used to handle the pro-Palestine demonstrations involved oppressive tactics, according to the protesters. “Our shared struggle for dignity, justice, and the right to live free from state violence is international, and it is only through collective resistance and solidarity that these oppressive structures can be dismantled,” they wrote. The Emory encampment coincided with other demonstrations taking place at campuses across the country. At Columbia University, the New York City Police Department cleared an encampment of more than 100 protesters after they allegedly violated school policies while “severely” disrupting campus life and creating a “harassing” environment. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., visited Columbia on Wednesday to meet with university officials and Jewish students. “Speaker Johnson is going to speak to students at Columbia University because Governor Hochul and other officials in New York have completely failed in their duty to protect Jewish students and combat the rise of antisemitism in their party,” his spokesperson told TND. “We wish it weren’t necessary.”
