A person who spent the night stuck on a rock face in WA’s far north has been winched to safety close to 24 hours after the alarm was raised. The person, aged in their 20s, found trouble near Lake Argyle in the East Kimberley, about 2200km northeast of Perth, on Wednesday. A triple-0 call made about 5.15pm tipped authorities off to the emergency, with the person stuck about 150m up the rock face. They were plucked to safety by helicopter just after 4pm on Thursday.
Difficult terrain and conditions prevented the crew from making the rescue overnight. However, SES volunteers were able to deliver food, water and other essential items. Fortunately, the person was not injured or distressed. “They were monitored overnight and provided with a radio to communicate with emergency services on the ground,” a DFES spokesperson said. SES volunteers descended the rockface to access the person about 2pm and two hours later they were winched out by a helicopter.
