Launched last year as an event for female footballers, the Gauteng All-Star Games tournament will now cater for “women in sport, not just in football” through the addition of netball.
That’s the thinking behind netball being added to the line-up for the Gauteng All Star Games tournament.
Uniting women in sport is a phrase we hear always, like Portia [Modise] said, as women in sport, we don’t always support each other“The idea around that was, first, to create an elite competition for women’s sport in Gauteng and, second, to get some sort of mentorship-like programme going, where for instance, there is a 17-year-old girl and then we have the legendary Portia Modise, who has played football all her life.
“This year we decided that we not just about football but are about women’s sport and how we elevate women’s sport in Gauteng and in the country as a whole,” Ramathula added. “A little girl who wants to play netball now gets to mingle with a Dumisane Chauke who is now a coach.” “We are at the age where we are giving back, we are sharing the knowledge and experience we have to create these platforms to unite women in sport.”“Uniting women in sport is a phrase we hear always, like Portia [Modise] said, as women in sport, we don’t always support each other,” she said.Chauke said this would only have a positive impact on netball in the province and in the country at large.
