as customers may be charged uncapped, high prices on a locked-in contract without the ability to shop around for a better deal.
The state's regulator, the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal , is looking to recommend whether customers on embedded energy networks should have a maximum price cap. It is also looking at whether to ban new hot and cold water embedded networks and cap existing services.Embedded networks are privately owned networks that supply multiple homes and residents within a building, typically in newer residential developments, retirement villages, shopping centres and caravan parks.But for residents moving into homes on an embedded network, it can often be a locked-in contract meaning no shopping around for a better deal.
"Last year, a NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into embedded networks heard instances of residents receiving hot water charges for $2000 over a nine-month period and $9700 for a 14-month period," IPART tribunal member Sandra Gamble said.Embedded energy networks are usually used in new builds, retirement villages and caravan parks.
