ICYMI: Emails hint at divide between Shahab, government on COVID-19 in 2021
Dr. Saqib Shahab was writing to colleagues in early April of that year, before COVID-19 vaccines were widely available and when the emergence
“… the higher case numbers that we’re moving towards will certainly overwhelm ICU and acute capacity.” Shahab’s emails came days after Health Minister Paul Merriman defended the province’s approach at the time during a press conference, calling the existing protocols “very strong.” The emails obtained through freedom of information legislation offer a rare glimpse of when Shahab, the face of Saskatchewan’s COVID-19 response, appears to question the government’s approach. His email asks colleagues in the SHA to advise whether his statements are “correct or not correct. ”
