The tech mogul cited California’s new transgender rights law as “the final straw” for moving out of the state.
Elon Musk said he is moving more of his business empire to Texas. Musk-run X and SpaceX will shift their corporate headquarters to the Lone Star State from California, he wrote in a series of posts on X on Tuesday. He didn’t provide a timeline for the move, but he was clear about his rationale. “This is the final straw,” Musk commented on a post about a new California law protecting the privacy of transgender children.
“I did make it clear to Governor Newsom about a year ago that laws of this nature would force families and companies to leave California to protect their children,” Musk wrote in his series of posts on Tuesday. Newsom declined to provide a comment to WIRED, but his office pointed out that California law still requires parental consent for kids to change their names and that parents also are guaranteed access to education records. The issue of parents’ rights is personal for Musk.
