Elon Musk has declared all other robocar developers are 'fools' for relying on superhuman laser-based perception called LIDAR. He insists Tesla will do it all with just cameras & radar. What is his reasoning, and what do the other players think–and who will win?
Tesla Presentation last month, Elon Musk formalized his war on LIDAR for robocars. In recent times, he has repeatedly deprecated it, but in the investor day he came out swinging:
Tesla had decided to solve the problem of driving with just 8 cameras plus a front radar and some ultrasonic sensors for close-in work. Most other teams use all that but tend to add more radars and one or more LIDARs. Some add different LIDARs and even night-vision cameras. Tesla's approach is cheaper, though it requires a lot of processing power.
Most people say"when" rather than"if," and Tesla and others say that since humans can drive with just our eyes, it clearly can be done. But we travel with just our legs, and that is not an argument that cars should have legs instead of wheels. Birds flap their wings but that's not a proof that planes should do so. Sometimes the machine approach is the winner. We don't know the answer to that yet.
computer vision to drive safely, so superb that LIDAR no longer adds anything. The others feel that you can drive safely using LIDAR's reliability combined withcomputer vision. Musk feels that this is an error and that LIDAR is a crutch making people think they can get away with"very good."The others, by the way, generally feel that Tesla has its own crutch, which is driver assistance.
There is an interesting irony. While Tesla seeks the incremental journey from driver assist to robocar, and others seek the direct path to the robocar, it is Tesla that bets on a breakthrough in vision, while others are guided by improving what works today.and will be the subject of a future one. Today, it should be pointed out that the fatality described above into the crash barrier would likely not have happened with accurate maps that showed the correct geometry of the road.
