Billionaire ElonMusk suggested people who disapprove of his deal to purchase Twitter are afraid of free speech.
The Tesla CEO didn't name anyone, but his comments come amid reports of employees at Twitter expressing dread and Democrats and others being critical of the $44 billion buyout that was announced Monday. MSNBC host Ari Melber warned Musk, who plans to take the company private, could use Twitter to"secretly ban" or"turn down the reach" of a major party’s candidate ahead of an election.Twitter hosted an all-hands meeting with employees after the company accepted Musk's offer to purchase the company on Monday. Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal and Chairman Bret Taylor claimed the company would continue to operate as usual until the deal with Musk closes in six months.
When the deal was announced, Musk described free speech as"the bedrock of a functioning democracy" and Twitter as"the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated." Musk also has said he hopes his worst critics remain on Twitter"because that is what free speech means.
