Days after announcing a $35,000 Model 3, the CEO scheduled an unveiling event for the Model Y, a small SUV.
Last week started with news of a continued battle with the Securities and Exchange Commission over Elon Musk’s Twitter habit, and ended with the long-awaited announcement of a $35,000 Model 3 sedan, a shift to all-digital sales, and updated guidance for the first-quarter. That was plenty.
The Y isn’t expected to be available soon, though some timeline and pricing information could come out at the event; Musk said recently that production might start earlier next year. For bulls, all this could be seen as a sign that the company is gearing up to meet demand wherever it might be, with the pickup and small SUV segments particularly valuable in the U.S.
Bears see things the other way: That this might just fragment demand across product lines—and, perhaps, even push some demand out further if buyers decided they prefer to wait for the Y. Musk himself said during the company’s last conference call that demand for the Y might be higher than for the 3.
