Social media companies should be doing more to cooperate with the Australian government, the country’s spy boss said as tension grew between Elon Musk and Australian leaders.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk on Thursday called the Australian government “fascists” over plans to crack down on misinformation online. Social media companies could face fines up to 5% of their global revenue if they enable the spread of misinformation, under a law proposed Thursday by Australia’s Labor government. Tech platforms would be required to establish codes of conduct for how to stop dangerous misinformation from spreading, which would have to be approved by a regulator.

“For the life of me, I can’t see how Elon Musk or anyone else, in the name of free speech, thinks it is OK to have social media platforms publishing scam content,” Jones told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. “Publishing deep-fake material, publishing child pornography. Livestreaming murder scenes,” he continued.
