According to the Association for Career and Technical Education, 34% of jobs in Alabama will soon require education beyond high school, but not a four-year degree.
) - Since Elmore County Technical Center Director Emilie Johnson first started working there a decade ago, she says the program has more than doubled. “In 2016, there were nine programs and a little over 500 students; we now have 17 programs with a little over 1,200 students that flow through,” Johnson says.
“If they’re at a period school, they’re here for two periods. If they are at a block school, they are here for one block.” The center emphasizes hands-on experience in each of its 17 programs- from welding to woodworking, to public safety and beyond. The newest example of growth is a new diesel mechanic shop. Although it’s a work in progress, students started working on it last week. “We were finally able to open up our diesel program two years ago, they’ve been working the last two years out of sharing the lab with automotive or just working on cars in the parking lot,” Johnson explained. “The addition of the building and then being able to get in and actually have the lifts and equipment they need to work on diesel is just super exciting.” She attributes their growth in part to how both the state and county have changed the mentality of choosing a trade after high school. “When I was in high school, everybody had to go to college and you weren’t allowed to take a career tech class unless you were not college-bound,” Johnson remembers. “Those people now have children who are teenagers and we’re having to change that mindset to the fact that career technical education is for everybody.”Mom of 3 who was found alive after going missing 24 years ago reveals why she left, reports sayWoman charged in contraband smuggling incident at Elmore Correctional
