Foodies, history buffs, and snack fans will find plenty to digest in “Eat Your Heart Out: Iconic Chicagoland Foods” at the Elmhurst History Museum.

Bartlett noted that companies like Vienna Beef promote a food culture. It has a Hot dog Hall of Fame to honor great hot dog businesses, and Hot Dog University, where people can learn every aspect of operating a hot dog business. Buona established National Italian Beef Day, which was May 27 this year.

Oberg also noted that giardiniera is unique to Chicago. “You don’t find giardiniera anywhere else,” he said. “We make more than 100 different varieties.” Family Pizza Making Workshop at 4 p.m. Aug. 3, will feature hands-on pizza-making and decorating a chef hat for $20 per person. “People love to talk about food,” Goddard said. “As a historian, the more I got into it the more I realized it’s a really fascinating historical topic.”In addition to discussing pizza, hot dogs, and Italian beef, Goddard will share information on Frango Mints from Marshall Field’s and Eli’s Cheesecakes.

Eli’s Cheesecake was developed when the owner was trying to create “a signature dessert for his steakhouses in Chicago,” the historian reported. “The restaurants are gone but the cheesecake is going gangbusters.” Goddard will share other interesting stories on the iconic Chicago foods.Bartlett: “I’m kind of a dry guy. I’ve learned enough about Italian beef to almost be embarrassed by that answer so I’m trying to learn to eat it a little more wet. I don’t think I’m ever going to get to dipped.
