Following a six-race absence for an injury and a one-race suspension this season, Chase Elliott said he always felt he would need to win a race to make the 2023 NASCAR Cup playoffs – and it seems he was right.With six races remaining in the regular season, it’s still mathematically possible forto make it in the 16-driver playoff field on points but it’s becoming far more unrealistic.
A recent string of three consecutive top-five finishes even got Elliott thinking about making the playoff field without a win but a 13th at Atlanta and 12th last weekend at New Hampshire quickly put a damper on that idea. “Loudon was terrible. We struggled all weekend – which I was disappointed. I think as a team we all were,” he said. “We had a good test up there a couple of months ago. It hasn’t been a good track, so I was super-excited to get some extra laps and go up there and try to get better at a place where we haven’t been super good.
