The actor opens up about sisterhood, the power of quiet ambition, and what it was like having sleepovers and dinner parties with her 'Little Women' costars.
Scanlen herself isn’t so comfortable with being the center of attention. She considers herself an introvert and views performative behavior as “icky.” She'll regularly delete Instagram so she can focus on reading with no distractions. “There are people like Beth in our society who go unnoticed a lot of the time, and they’re the ones that get the work done and make real change in the world," she says. "Those people are rare, and there’s a lot to admire about them.
Scanlen is contemplative and chooses her words carefully—it feels consistent with Beth’s demeanor, though Scanlen says her costars considered her to be more of a Jo. That said, “I feel pretty boring compared to all of the characters that I play,” Scanlen jokes. Sheplayed some complicated women, to be fair.
When asked which onscreen sister she was closest to, Scanlen answers like a true March—which is to say it’s impossible to pick. “I don’t think I ever had a moment alone with any particular person," she says. "We were all inextricably linked to one another. The connection we have is incomparable.” But then again, there are some things that only flesh-and-blood sisters can get away with. “My sister was visiting for a week, and she ended up taking home a lot of my underwear.
