“I stayed quiet for 40 years.” The Long Red Line in Elgin is marking its 10th anniversary as it continues its efforts to raise awareness of violence toward women.

Attendees at a Long Red Line event in Elgin in 2017 use red scarves to show solidarity with and offer support to women who have been the victims of assault and violence.“I never reported it because, at that time, I would’ve been on trial. I didn’t want to do that to my family. One guy said if I told anyone, he would kill me. I believed him,” she said. “I stayed quiet for 40 years.”

The Elgin City Council is expected to approve a proclamation recognizing the group’s anniversary at its Wednesday night meeting.“People can hear the same message over and over again, but it’s not until they hear a voice that resonates that they can find their voice and heal,” said Ramona Burns, who chairs the Long Red Line committee.

One Billion Rising has an event in February that the Long Red Line participates in, Burns said. Usually, that event is held at Elgin Community College, but this year organizers decided to hold multiple events in April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, she said.
