Discover the types of kicking pads available, their features, and how to choose the best one for your skill level and training needs.

Are you a fighter who trains to strike hard and fast? To take your kicks to new heights, you need more than time in the ring (or octagon). Kicking pads help you examine your technique — particularly how and where you land kicks. These densely packed pads also provide moderate resistance, so you’re able to experience a bit of realistic pushback. There are several types of kicking pads, each designed for a specific purpose and level of training.

'Pork chop' pads, often used in tae kwon do, are elongated and ideal for practicing high and aerial kicks. Kickboxing pads are densely packed to provide significant resistance and absorb intense force. Low-kick pads, sometimes called strike or kick shields, are rectangular and protect the holder during low kick practice. The density of a kicking pad affects the resistance it offers. Generally, the more densely packed a pad is, the more resistance you'll feel. Thickness also varies depending on the intended use. Pads held closer to the holder's body are usually thicker for obvious reasons. Kicking pads feature stability grips, straps, or handles to provide an ergonomic grip for the holder, preventing fatigue and eliminating rug burn on hands and forearms. Some pads offer multiple grip options for versatility. In terms of design, kicking pads can be monochromatic, feature brand logos, or have target markings. Some fighters prefer plain pads and customize them with paint or markers. However, markings and logos can wear off over time due to constant contact with feet. Prices for kicking pads vary depending on quality and design. Lightweight, durable options can be found for under $25, while better materials and designs typically cost $50-$75. Advanced fighters seeking top-quality pads should expect to spend $100-$200. For younger kids, especially those with lower-ranking belts, invest in low-kick pads to protect the holder while practicing kicks at various levels. Most kicking pads are made from leather or high-grade PU (polyurethane) and will be labeled accordingly. Some may contain latex, so those with allergies should check with the manufacturer before purchasing.
