To celebrate graduating from the G.R.E.A.T. program, students from J.E. Turner, Allentown and Nan Gray Davis Elementary got to meet first responders from different agencies.

) - For these elementary school students, it was one last lesson and a chance to celebrate. They just graduated from the Gang Resistance Education and Training program. Something the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office has been doing for the past three years to reach 4th and 5th graders throughout the county.

“We’re trying to stop a lot of this violence we’re having in the schools,” said MCSO Deputy Josh Pounds. “We have an outbreak of fights when you get into high school and things like that. We’re trying to control these kids and get them in a better direction now so we can help guide them as they get older.” It’s a six-week program where deputies talk with students about things like gangs, bullying, making good choices and the importance of respect. MCSO says it’s making a difference. “I learned that it’s good to be nice to people and if you be nice to people, they’ll be nice to you,” said Winry Lipscomb. “They have actually enjoyed the program, it seems like we’ve actually made an impact in some lives,” said Deputy Pounds. “We’ve had some teachers reach out and ask us to come back and talk to some kids we’ve taught the class to.” To celebrate graduating from the G.R.E.A.T. program, students from J.E. Turner, Allentown and Nan Gray Davis Elementary got to meet first responders from different agencies. They also got a closer look at some of the tools and equipment they use every day. “I always wanted to talk to them and learn more about what they do for a living, and it was really nice to get to know what they do,” said Laykin Stokes. “The SWAT truck was really fun because we got to see a couple of the weapons, they use then we hopped out and went to the fire truck,” said Jonathan Owens. “The SWAT team was the best. That’s the one I like.” Students also got to see live demonstrations and get up close and personal with police vehicles and even meet mounted patrol horses. But the most important part, building strong positive relationships with law enforcement. “Here is where you learn how to be safe and follow the rules mostly and these deputies and officers are amazing,” said Tristan Gomez. The Sheriff’s Office says it’s not stopping here. This summer, they’re launching a new program called Camp Explorer where kids will continue connecting with first responders and go on field trips to places like the EMA. The camp is open to all Mobile County kids between the ages of 8 and 12.
