Electricity-generating multinational, Karpowership SA, has reached an agreement with Ezemvelo Wildlife in KwaZulu-Natal to mitigate the impact of their project at Richard’s Bay.
Karpowership SA was awarded a 20-year tender worth about R200 billion to extract liquefied natural gas offshore in 2021 at Richard’s, Coega and Saldanha bays to produce 1 220MW of electricity from floating ships to augment Eskom’s supply. This was part of SA’s Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme projects.
“The Port of Richards Bay presents a unique circumstance where the active industrial port, used largely for coal exports, operates within an estuarine bay. Although a relatively novel practice in South Africa, biodiversity offsetting is a form of impact mitigation,” the company said. Ezemvelo has indicated that it would not object to the issuing of an environmental authorisation to Karpowership due to the company’s ambitious environmental conservation endeavour.“Biodiversity offsetting is one of the ways in which South Africa’s protected and conservation areas can be expanded, thereby promoting conservation, as well as securing ecologically sustainable development together with economic and social development.
