MIRI: Electricity outages causing disruptions to automated teller machines (ATMs) in Bank Simpanan Nasional branches in rural Sarawak districts are causing headaches for welfare recipients trying to withdraw urgent cash aid, say concerned villagers and local politicians.
In remote Belaga district in northern Sarawak, community elder Harry Wing said there were long queues every day as folks tried to access welfare aid at the BSN branch there.
"Belaga district uses generator sets as there is no direct electricity supply from the main grid. We experience breakdown of power supply about three times per week. Sarawak PKR information chief Abun Sui said they had been receiving calls from frustrated folks hit hard by the movement control order who were unable to get welfare aid from the federal and state governments."The BSN ATM in Belaga town is often out of service. This is the only ATM that caters to the needs of Belaga district and Sungai Asap , which have a population of about 15,000 people.Sui, a human rights lawyer, said he also received calls from people in Pakan and Sarikei districts .
"All these are causing major headaches for rural folks already facing food shortages during this MCO period," he said.
