Switching to an electric vehicle significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions. But there's one thing that's preventing EVs from maximizing their planet-saving power.

The more transportation is electrified, the more power is going to be added and needed throughout the nation, Lori Bird, director of the World Resource Institute's U.S. Energy program, told CBS News. The more renewable energy that's used, the less carbon dioxide it takes to provide power and the less greenhouse gas emissions are put into the atmosphere.

The more renewable energy the nation uses, the cleaner the grid will get and the more effective electric vehicles will be.
