In an emailed response to a question from the StarPhoenix, Weckworth indicated the cost to purchase and install the charging stations was about $70,000 and the cost to run them over a two-year period is projected at between $17,000 and $23,000. Funding for the initiative was approved in the city’s 2020 capital budget.

The media release cites data from SGI showing the number of EVs registered in Saskatoon climbing from 41 in 2016 to 661 in 2022; it says 431 of them are fully battery-powered and the other 230 are plug-in hybrids. The city’s emissions reduction strategy has targets of 30 per cent of vehicle sales being EVs by 2030, rising to 90 per cent by 2050.ntroduced in the 2021-22 provincial budget, meant to ensure EV drivers continue to contribute to road and highway maintenance, in line with funds raised from fuel tax for internal combustion vehicles.Article content

Nationally, Statistics Canada data released in October 2022 indicated just over 86,000 EVs were registered across the country in 2021, making up about five per cent of all vehicle registrations for that year. This was up from just under three per cent of registrations in 2019 and one per cent of registrations in 2017.Quebec accounted for 43 per cent of EVs registered in 2021; British Columbia and Ontario accounted for 28 per cent and 23 per cent, respectively.
