There are currently at least 56 EVs selling for under R600,000 in South Africa, with three models accounting for the bulk of the listings.
South Africans in the market for a more affordable electric vehicle have six models to choose from for under R600,000, provided they are willing to consider used options.Some of these cars are truly impressive, boasting the most power and quickest acceleration of any electric, petrol, diesel, or hybrid model.
The most affordable proper passenger EV is the BYD Dolphin hatchback, which is priced from R539,990 for the Standard model and R599,990 for the Extended version.While much has been made about the lost battery capacity of used EVs, the reality is that many of these cars are likely to have retained around 80% or more of their original range.Manufacturers calculate that a battery pack’s total range will drop below 80% only after the car has covered 200,000km.
A Tesla Model S in the UK tested by Autotrader has also racked up nearly 700,000km and still had over 70% of its original capacity left.
