Residents in a slew of New South Wales council areas will not get to vote in the upcoming September local government elections as not enough people have put their hands up to run.
A number of local government areas will not got to the polls with the rest of New South Wales in September due to a lack of candidates for council elections .The New South Wales Electoral Commission has declared uncontested elections for NSW councils or wards in 14 local government areas .
Charles Sturt University political scientist Dominic O'Sullivan said the apparent low appetite to seek elected office in the other LGAs could be due to a lack of trust in local government. Berrigan Mayor Julia Cornwell McKean said her shire had seven candidates for eight councillor positions, down from 13 in 2021.
The council areas and wards where elections will not be held in September had just enough nominees to fill the positions available — but no extra nominees to contest them — and will not require a by-election.
