Ten people are vying for three seats on the Los Angeles Unified school board, and at least one of the seats will be filled by a non-incumbent.
contest – the most competitive of the three races – features candidates María Brenes, executive director of the nonprofit InnerCity Struggle; Rocío Rivas, research and policy deputy for school board member Jackie Goldberg; Miguel Ángel Segura, previously a staffer under former school board President Ref Rodriguez and now a substitute teacher; and Erica Vilardi-Espinosa, education chair and treasurer of the Los Feliz Neighborhood Council.

District 2 primarily covers East L.A., including Boyle Heights, Lincoln Heights and El Sereno, as well as the downtown and communities surrounding Los Feliz, a neighborhood it picked up following last year’s adoption of a new redistricting map. There is no incumbent in this race since outgoing board member Mónica García could not seek reelection due to term limits., incumbent Nick Melvoin, the current board vice president, is seeking a second term. He’s being challenged by Gentille Barkhordarian, an engineer and LAUSD parent frustrated by how the district has dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic; and Tracey Schroeder, a teacher forced to teach online because she’s not vaccinated against the coronavirus.
