The Independent Electoral Commission has called for an end to robust political campaigning.

With voter turnout likely to be nearer the 70 percent mark, not all of the 26,736,803 registered voters will take part in the 2019 election.

More than 700,000 South Africans will cast special votes on Monday and Tuesday. The remaining registered voters will take to the polls on Wednesday. The Independent Electoral Commission says it's ready. While power utility Eskom has promised there will be no planned electricity shortages on Wednesday 8 May, the IEC said alternatives shall be provided should there be power outages.

Voting hours on Wednesday, 8 May will be between 7am and 9pm. Voters who are in the queue closer to closing time will be assisted by election officials. During a recent briefing on the IEC’s state of readiness for the election, IEC Commissioner Nomsa Masuku said,"It is important to remind South Africans that, even though the right to protest is protected in law, it is also protected that you don't interfere with the process of the Electoral Commission.”

OPINIONISTA: 2019 election set to mark the end of an eraOPINIONISTA: 2019 election set to mark the end of an eraThe 2019 election is fraught with uncertainties and will probably signal the end of South Africa’s approximate two-party system. The Economic Freedom Fighters holds the hearts of a large, growing body of young voters — the electoral constituency of the future, and these elections are set to confirm that the EFF is here to stay. The party has passed the viability test that the ANC split-offs, the United Democratic Movement and Congress of the People failed.
