The elderly couple crushed by a falling tree southwest of Melbourne were visiting Victoria from interstate. A 77-year-old man and his 73-year-old wife were trapped inside their car for more than an hour when the tree fell on Main Rd, near Berrys Rd, Gellibrand on Wednesday. The man died at the scene while the woman was airlifted to The Alfred in a critical condition.
The woman’s condition has improved and she is now listed as serious but stable. The state has battled extreme weather conditions for the past several days, with strong winds bringing down trees across the state. From Tuesday to Thursday morning SES Victoria received more than 2000 calls for help. The Emerald SES unit had the most call-outs followed by Warragul, Morwell, Hastings and Nillumbik.
