Action comes day after city complained it was getting an unfair share of region's homeless population
The city of El Cajon has threatened local hotels that they will be fined for “unauthorized operation of an emergency shelter” because they are accepting homeless people with vouchers, escalating a dispute between the East County city and county officials.
Wells also said the notices were a warning, and did not mean hotels were facing immediate fines. They were asked to decrease the number of homeless people in their rooms, however. Wells said Wednesday that the city had conducted a survey and found that people with vouchers were in 26 percent of 703 occupied rooms in El Cajon hotels. At the Travelodge and Relax Inn & Suites, the survey found all of the guests had vouchers.“Bill Wells is a fraud,” he said Friday. “While our county government is stepping up in a bipartisan way to clear encampments, launch new shelters and actually get people off the street, the mayor of El Cajon would rather dishonestly grandstand.
Vu wrote that El Cajon police officers had followed new guests to their rooms, asked where they had come from and for their identification. “And the city of El Cajon wants to shut them down, just send those people back to the street,” he said. “That’s going to help.”
