The El Cajon City Council is considering lifting decades-old restrictions that have prohibited new bars from opening in the downtown area. The council members discussed the possibility of allowing more nightlife options for residents and visitors, with some suggesting a trial period or completely removing the restrictions.

Main Tap Tavern in downtown El Cajon on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024 in San Diego, California. Downtown El Cajon could have more of a nightlife in the future as city officials consider lifting decades-old restrictions that prohibit new bars from opening in the area.

Metschel also drew applause after she described how she used to live in San Francisco and could walk around Union Square at night to visit stores and other businesses. With all council members open to the idea, the Planning Commission will be directed to draft a recommendation that will go before the City Council for consideration. Possible options are to lift the restriction completely or to allow just a certain number of bars to open on a trial basis.

The restrictions were made in response to years of rising criminal activity associated with some alcohol-serving businesses, according to a staff report presented to the City Council on Tuesday by Assistant City Manager Vince DiMaggio. “Twenty years ago, downtown El Cajon looked like skid row,” Councilmember Gary Kendrick said. “Now it’s a lot better.”

Kendrick and Councilmember Steve Goble suggested the city allow just two more bars in the area at first and then consider expanding.
