ERNEST JOHN “EJ” OBIENA’S quest to return to the Olympics officially starts on Sunday at the Bauhaus-Galan in Stockholm, Sweden.
The 365-day qualifying window for the Paris Olympics started on Saturday with Obiena hoping to meet the men’s pole vault of 5.82 meters. His chances are great—he cleared the 6.0-meter barrier at the Bergen Jump Challenge in Bruggen, Norway last June 11 and has the Asian record of 5.94 meters tucked in his belt. “Training never stops. I would love to qualify as early as that [Stockholm],” Obiena told BusinessMirror over the weekend.
After Stockholm, Obiena, 27, gets three more chances to make the Paris grade within his immediate view—the Meeting International de Sotteville in Sotteville-Les-Rouen, France, on Friday, the Ostrava Golden Spike in the Czech Republic on Tuesday and the Asian championships in Thailand from July 12 to 16.
“I just returned to the usual stuff—training, training and training. It is the same training, no time to relax,” Obiena said.Obiena’s long time personal adviser Jim Lafferty believes Obiena will qualify for the Olympics in first attempt in Sweden.
