Given around half of the daily intake of water comes from food, the scientists estimated people only really need about 1.5 to 1.8 litres per day. Professor John Speakman from the University of Aberdeen, who ran the study, explained: “The original estimate of two litres a day comes from a slight miscalculation.
Travers says that while severe dehydration is very rare, mild dehydration is common in her clinic. “I see that a lot,” she says. “People come to me and think they’ve, when actually they have constipation because they’re not drinking enough fluids. Other signs like headaches are quite common, and people who are dehydrated often complain they get really tired and sluggish towards the afternoon or the end of the day.
Luckily, this is one of the easiest, simplest diet problems to fix – although she notes that individual requirements for fluids vary depending on things like how active you are, and your size.
