Heavy is the croissant that wears the crown. Here's how you can help decide which bakery will receive the honor.

On May 7, a bakery battle royale will descend on Union Square's Beacon Grand Hotel as eight Bay Area boulangeries will wage a friendly, flaky competition to determine the"Best Croissant" in San Francisco.

This year's finalists, which were announced Monday morning, are Berkeley's Fournée Bakery, Mountain View's The Midwife and The Baker and Benicia's One House Bakery. San Francisco's local, buttery flavors are represented through Jane the Bakery, Kahnfections, Le Marais Bakery, Maison Nico and Thorough Bread and Pastry.

The final round is being organized by French Morning Media Group, which describes itself as the"leading online media group for lovers of France," and L'Apéro, which aims to"promote French Hospitality & Gastronomy in Northern California." A panel of professional chefs will award the Grand Prix while the public can sample croissants and other pastries and vote on which bakery receives the"Fan Prize."

Tickets start at $25 and include your choice of hot beverage , as well as a selection of spreads, cheese and charcuterie.
