Mr Gooch said that while producers hoped there would be enough eggs on shelves for consumers to buy to make their coronation quiches, they were more concerned that retailers “didn’t want to pay farmers to produce eggs last year [which has] led to the problems we have now”. He added: “They’ve been so shortsighted. They were willing to let farmers go bust and eggs go short, which is a real worry.”Andrew Opie, director of food and sustainability at the British Retail Consortium, which represents several supermarket chains, said: “Supermarkets source, and will continue to source, the vast majority of their food from the UK and know they need to pay a sustainable price to farmers.
