A San Antonio probate judge has extended a court order protecting the historic Luther Hotel in Palacios from being demolished, giving preservation advocates at least until June 22 to continue to rally support.

The early 1900s Luther Hotel in Palacios has been under threat of demolition, but local preservationists have fought to protect it and secured a judge's order to keep it standing at least through June 22. They staged a demonstration in December.A court hearing via Zoom is set for April 14, followed by a June 22 hearing at the Matagorda County Courthouse in Bay City.

Findley’s 33 known heirs, including a sister in Alabama, have since entered an agreement to sell the property to the Ed Rachal Foundation, a Corpus Christi nonprofit — on the condition the hotel be demolished. The site would be redeveloped as a modern resort. But the hotel hasn't had a thorough engineering study on its structural stability — a key piece of evidence normally afforded landmark structures threatened with demolition.

“What we need to do is get people to the table talking. We’ve said from the beginning we just want to find a win-win solution," Doughty said.
