The red berets wrote to Scopa, challenging National Treasury's initial decision to grant Eskom exemption from disclosing any financial irregularities in its financial statements.
JOHANNESBURG - The Economic Freedom Fighters welcomed National Treasury's decision to decline Eskom's request for an exemption from disclosing irregular, fruitless, and wasteful expenditure. The party wrote to Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts , challenging National Treasury's initial decision to grant Eskom the exemption.
The power utility sought a three-year exemption from disclosing any financial irregularities in its financial statements. Eskom said doing so would alleviate the possibility of a qualified audit opinion, which, in turn, would lead to its downgrade by rating agencies. The red berets first flagged the matter after Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana granted Eskom its request in April. The EFF said National Treasury was acting as a super ministry that answered to no one.
The party further said granting Eskom the exemption would have been tantamount to opening more doors of corruption at the power utility. It said that while it welcomed National Treasury's decision, it remained wary of the African National Congress's attempts to conceal the governing party's complicity in corruption.
