A dispute between the ANC, EFF and the Patriotic Alliance over mayoral committee positions in Nelson Mandela Bay preceded the announcement of Gary van Niekerk's mayoral committee on Tuesday, leading to questions about the coalition's longevity.
The ANC and the EFF had successfully cobbled together six parties in a takeover of Nelson Mandela Bay just nine months after the DA had managed to gain power in the metro, with the election of Retief Odendaal as mayor.
Van Niekerk's party, the Northern Alliance, played a key role, along with the PA, in tilting the council numbers in favour of the return of the ANC in the metro.
