The EFF's top brass is threatening legal action against News24 after it published a story based on a new book by Jacques Pauw.publisher and News24 with court action.
Malema further wanted News24 to retract a story, based on damning allegations made in the book, that he was plied with cash and expensive alcohol by Mazzotti. Malema has since denied the allegations in the book – published by NB Publishers, a division of Media24 Boeke – that went on sale in electronic and print format on Friday.
Malema, Shivambu and Ndlozi demanded that News24 retract its story and publish an apology. They also demanded that Pauw and NB Publishers immediately withdraw the book, including the removal of the book for sale from resellers.
"This particular line of allegations is particularly harmful given the role that our clients play in South African society, that being senior politicians, as part of South Africa's second-largest opposition party," read the letter. Pauw did not approach Malema or Mazzotti for comment prior to the publication of his book for fear that his sources may be targeted and intimidated. This"decision was ethically and legally justified under the circumstances", the letter noted.The South African Press Code requires that journalists give a person who is the subject of critical reportage the right of reply.
