Edward Snowden says he’d be happy to leave Russia and move to France

Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor who was behind one of the largest intelligence leaks in U.S. history, told“I applied for asylum in France in 2013 under [former French President François] Hollande and of course we would love to see [Emmanuel] Macron roll out an invitation,” he said.

Snowden is promoting his new book — “Permanent Record” — in media interviews and his interview to France Inter came a day after French Justice Minister Nicole BelloubetBut Belloubet so far seems to stand alone within the French government.while hinting such an offer was unlikely due to the major diplomatic fallout with the U.S. that would ensue.

French MEP Nathalie Loiseau, who lead Macron's movement list in the European election, stood up for Snowden, saying“Snowden served humanity, he showed us with evidence that there was an extraordinarily vast surveillance system working with companies that accepted to give their data behind consumers’ back," she said."Thank you Edward Snowden!"

Loiseau stressed that it's technically"not the president that grants asylum in France" but that requests go through a process led by the French Office for Protection of Refugees and Stateless persons, an independent agency. “Personally I don’t see what Snowden is doing in Russia, one of the countries most used to mass surveillance and manipulation … I’d be happier if he was in Europe … today what I can see is that no European country has given Edward Snowden asylum, I think we are totally out of step with the values we promote."
