Victorian school principals experience worse health and wellbeing than the general population and government initiatives have done little to improve outcomes, a report found.

The annual Australian Catholic University survey released in March revealed “red flag” alerts - when leaders are at risk of self-harm, occupational health problems or serious impacts on their quality of life - had jumped 18.7 percentage points in a year.

The Education Department acknowledged the increasing workload for principals in 2018, advising the government that the number of complexity of incidents principals were required to report and manage had vastly increased. Australian Education Union Victorian branch president Meredith Peace said the report was a warning sign that urgent measures should be taken to avoid a mass exodus of principals.
