, R-California. Luttrell would be one piece of the puzzle for McCarthy, who is angling to become Speaker of the House should the GOP regain control. To get there, McCarthy will need to shore up support against the far-right Freedom Caucus, which has offered very tentative support contingent on rule changes that would curb his power.in the primary.
Voters in Texas’ 8th Congressional District seemed to prefer that. Luttrell, 46, earned enough votes to avoid a runoff, and his victory in the general election seems fairly secure. This time around, we think Luttrell, who lives in Magnolia with his family, is the best candidate for constituents in a district that was reconstituted to add some 300,000 Harris County residents while eliminating The Woodlands, Huntsville and Crockett.
The district has moderated slightly in its redistricting, but it remains bright red. Trump won the new district by 27 percentage points in 2020, compared to 42 percentage points under the prior boundaries. Luttrell, a former Navy SEAL, offers a buffet of Republican talking points in his campaign materials: building the border wall, cutting federal spending and achieving energy independence among them. He has raised some $3 million and has the endorsement of former Energy Secretary Rick Perry.
Originally from Houston, Jones moved several years ago to Coldspring with her family for the peace and quiet. The transition also showed her how rural communities are often left behind; it helps inform a campaign platform that includes funding high-speed internet and expanding health-care access. Her smalltown perspective also offers opportunities where she thinks she can build consensus with Republican neighbors. “We live in a rural area where owning a firearm is a very common thing. I own handguns,” Jones told the board. “My husband and I have six children and we’ve trained them to safely handle firearms.” Jones thinks policies including universal background checks offer reasonable ways to regulate responsible gun ownership.
