in the Republican primaries and he has amassed a following in the wake of a series of unsuccessful runs. With experience in the energy industry, he had several policy proposals that caught our eye, including working to expand early childhood education and diversifying energy sources. He’s also expressed a desire to reconsider the state’s abortion ban, making room for exceptions and possibly extending the six-week window to 15 weeks. “At some point, we do have to draw the line,” he said.
But his primary focus, he told the editorial board, is crime and law enforcement. The Republican Party of Texas delegate warned about political ideologies in K-12 curriculum and also supports school vouchers. Johnson, meanwhile, does not support vouchers and is, she told us, “100 percent pro-choice,” something she says reflects the views of the Medical Center doctors who feel they have been hamstrung by state laws that criminalize abortion and threaten prosecution of anyone assisting in an abortion.
