Editorial: Two teachers sacrificed everything for their students in Uvalde.
Last week was the final week of classes for the year at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, where Mireles and her co-teacher of five years Irma Garcia taught fourth grade. Students at the school celebrated their accomplishments that morning with colorful honor roll certificates and beaming photographs from adoring parents.
Together, Mireles and Garcia had some 40 years of teaching experience. Both were graduates of Sul Ross State University, a collection of four West Texas campuses that bills itself as the Frontier University of Texas,to the Washington Post. Mireles, 44, had training in special education and bilingual education. Garcia, 49, earned her bachelor’s degree in 1997 and spent her entire teaching career at Robb Elementary.
Mireles’ daughter posted a tribute to Twitter and Facebook. “My sweet mommy, I will miss you forever,”“I want to hug you one last time and I want to feel the calluses on your hands because you were not only a teacher during the day, but the most hardworking cross fitter in the afternoon.” They both died heroes. Garcia’s nephew John Martinez said his Tia Garcia was a second mom to her students. Hethat authorities told his family that they “found her body there, embracing children in her arms pretty much until her last breath.”
