Of all our government institutions, the Supreme Court may be the most sacrosanct, the very embodiment of honesty and objectivity. It isn’t.

Rep. Hank Johnson speaks during a news conference on April 19, calling for the immediate resignation of Justice Clarence Thomas from the Supreme Court. But there’s more than one scandal there.Less than a year ago, the Supreme Court delivered a bombshell ruling, overturning abortion rights that had been protected since the landmark Roe v. Wade decision of 1973.

If Thomas cared about trust, he would be trying to uphold, not besmirch it. He is embroiled in his own scandals more egregious than the leak. Sixty-two percent of the respondents in the latest NPR/PBS News Hour/Marist Poll indicated they “have not very much” or “no confidence” in the court, the lowest recorded in the five years Marist has been asking. Other pollsters reached similar results, including Gallup, which found only 25 percent of the respondents had a “great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in the court.
