Editorial | The reason our national Under-23 soccer team is not going to its age group Afcon and the Olympics is not because our players are not good enough. It’s because of shambolic administration

For starters, all the national junior and youth teams are guided by part-time coaches: TheUnder-23s’ David Notoane is attached to Mamelodi Sundowns; Under-17 trainer Duncan Crowie is the head of youth at National First Division side Cape Town Spurs; and Kaizer Chiefs development coach Vela Khumalo was in charge of the Under-20s, who failed to qualify for Afcon via the Cosafa qualifier tournament in Eswatini last October.

The study found that national junior and youth teams don’t play sufficient matches to promote sound player development. The document further highlighted the limitation of training camps to periods only leading up to tournaments, something that was specifically raised by Broos in his own assessment. Prior to their qualifying campaigns, theUnder-17, Under-20 and Under-23 squads had stood idle for long periods, and it is not surprising that the latter two fell short of their targets.Safa’s Vision 2030 development plan has just started, and it is lamentable that the Under-23s already won’t be at Afcon and the Olympics. In times of uncertainty you need journalism you can trust.
