The new primary schedule is not only more representative of voters of color, but also more...
In 2019, Joe Biden campaigns in South Carolina. The new proposed Democratic primary schedule would start in that state.SAN ANTONIO — When then-presidential candidate Barack Obama won the Iowa Democratic caucuses on Jan. 3, 2008, it wasn’t as much a historic event as a tectonic shift for American politics and race.
Thus, the problem. A Black or Latino candidate running in the Iowa caucuses and the next stop, the New Hampshire primary, had to prove they could appeal to white voters before white candidates had to prove they could appeal to Black and brown voters. And in the years since, there has been considerable discussion about why two states that don’t reflect the diversity of the nation or the Democratic Party base have such influence on the presidential nomination.
It was retail politics at its best, or worst. But although it marked the beginning of the quadrennial democratic process of choosing presidential nominees, it was anything but democratic in terms of voter representation. The party’s rules and bylaws committee has accepted a recommendation from President Joe Biden that would allow South Carolina to go first, holding its primary on Feb. 3, 2024. South Carolina would be followed by Nevada and New Hampshire on Feb. 6, 2024, Georgia on Feb. 13, 2024, and Michigan on Feb. 27, 2024. The committee will vote on the proposal in early 2023.
