After a two year hiatus, the dinner — a reminder to never underestimate the heart of San Antonio — will be back in person.SAN ANTONIO — Often, we forget that people are essentially good and a community must be reminded of its inherent untapped decency.

COVID suspended the Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner in 2020 and 2021. But even the two-year hiatus from in-person gatherings couldn’t damper the spirit of the event as thousands of Thanksgiving dinners were delivered to seniors and the less fortunate. The city has been a sponsor since the first dinner, and corporate sponsors, foundations, local businesses and private donors also make it possible. But it’s the 4,000 volunteers responsible for everything from food preparation, decorations, transportation, entertainment and security who keep this Feast of the Heart beating.

Expanding community and breaking down the walls of isolation are among the gifts offered by the Jimenez family to San Antonio with this annual dinner. But that has never been more important than it is this year as people, especially older ones, emerge from the isolation of the pandemic.
