Editorial: Jesse Treviño’s art captured his passion and perseverance, love for San Antonio
“La Veladora of Our Lady of Guadalupe,” a ceramic mural featuring a three-dimensional votive candle at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center is just one of Jesse Treviño’s most prominent public art works.The son of Dolores Treviño was also the son of San Antonio.
Memory called him at this pivotal moment. Memory pulled him home. Memory carried him back to his art. Memory would never let his limbs or mind forget the physical pain sustained in that rice paddy, pain that stalked and hunted him for the rest of his life. The creator of some of San Antonio’s most recognizable public art, Treviño was especially well-known for work that captured small moments of Mexican American life on the West Side where he was raised. Three of his pieces are in the Smithsonian Institution’s American art collection.
But for sheer size and public viewings, Treviño’s largest imprint on San Antonio is his public art including the 93-foot tall “Spirit of Healing” mural of an angel and child on the wall of the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio; the “La Veladora of Our Lady of Guadalupe,” a ceramic mural featuring a three-dimensional votive candle at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center; and the 36-foot World War II mural in the Central Library downtown.
