Health officials fear that complacency may be an enemy as brutal as any virus.

“The emergency phase is over, but COVID is not,” Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO technical lead on COVID, said. About a month before the WHO declared the global emergency over, President Joe Biden signed a bipartisan congressional resolution that brought the national emergency to a close Thursday, three years after it was enacted.

“COVID is going to be with us, but we know how to live with it in a way that need not cause disruption, need not put people in the hospital — or worse,” Ashish K. Jha, the coronavirus response coordinator for the White House, said.For all the optimism, however, U.S. health officials warn another COVID variant may arise.
