Editorial | Fighting racism is a duty that falls on all of us
Kaepernick was eventually fired by his team, but the gesture lived on and gained momentum around the world, particularly in light of police brutality and the murders of George Floyd and many others at the hands of law enforcement officers in the US.In South Africa, considering the country’s deeply racist and oppressive history, support for nonracialism and activism against systemic prejudice should be a matter of daily belief and support.
Apparently not so for Proteas cricketer Quinton de Kock. His decision not to “take the knee” and his withdrawal from selection to play against the West Indies was a slap in the face. His excuse was that it was a last-minute mandate from CSA and seemed to come with an “or else” implied in the directive. He believed that it was political and that politics has no place in sport.
South African cricketer Quinton de Kock has apologised following his refusal to take a knee in a stand against racism ahead of the match against West Indies earlier this week.
